Why do we place handles at maximum possible distance from the hinges in a door ?

Explanation

  • we place handles at maximum possible distance from the hinges in a door because torque  is rotating effect of force.
  • It is calculated by formula :
  • τ = R × F
  • τ = R F sinθ , as R is large τ would be high .

  • The handles of the doors are at maximum distance from the hinges as it wants to make a perpendicular distance line of action of the force from hinges maximum.
  • This results in large torque at hinges and doors can be opened or closed easily.
